4. The Johannite Legend of the Templars

Under this head, we shall present a composite, from several sources, of the Johannite Legend. We draw from several texts, since we do not possess the original. The primary sources are:

1. J. M. Allegro's THE DEAD SEA SCROLLS AND THE CHRISTIAN MYTH.
2. H. P. Blavatsky's ISIS UNVEILED, II-382, 386.
3. Eliphas Levi's HISTORY OF MAGIC, pp. 207-212.
4. Kenneth Mackenzie's ROYAL MASONIC CYCLOPAEDIA., s.v., Johannite Christians.
5. A. G. Mackey's ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF FREEMASONRY (2 Volume Edition, 1924 e.v.)
6. George Oliver's HISTORICAL LANDMARKS OF FREEMASONRY, Volume II.
7. Albert Pike's MORALS AND DOGMA, Chapter 30.
8. SEPHER TOLEDOTH YESHU, by sources unknown, but composed during the Talmudic Period.
9. A. E. Waite's NEW ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF FREEMASONRY, Vol. II, pp. 217-241.
10. Nesta Webster's SECRET SOCIETIES AND SUBVERSIVE MOVEMENTS, pp. 66-70.
11. John Yarker's ARCANE SCHOOLS, pp. 158, 189-98, 462.

Plus, some HTML documents we have received, Higgins' ANACALYPSIS, and other sources as necessary. We are sure that there are plenty of items overlooked, if so, correct us.

We have found that this story is the same story, more or less, in every place we find it. It has come down to us probably in the late 18th to early 19th Century e.v. That is to say, that is when it was formed into a narrative. The story can only be considered authentic, since history is proving it to be so. Madame Blavatsky in ISIS UNVEILED spent a considerable amount of space on the Nazaraeans. These can be seen to be antecedents of the Johannites. Our own research into the name of John, tells us that it goes back to the name Dositheos, or al-Dustan. This name, too, goes back to Assyria, during the Samaritan exchange program. We find the Phoenician name Sanchuniathon["the God Sakkhun has given"] bearing a similar etymology as Dositheos ["Gift of God", hence the title of the Work, The Brethren of the GIFT]. And, the name Jonathan [Yahu - Natan, "Yahu has Given,"] really goes back farther in time, to old Sumer. For, we are told that Oannes (which rhymes with IOANNES and has for one of its translations "Annedotus", a name which can be seen to be a corruption of several ancient languages, An, or En, for Gods, or Lords or Heaven, and dotus, for dosis, or dusis, GIFT) derives from U-An, which is a derivative of EnKi. Do the research, as we have, and you shall see that this Johannite Legend of the Templars has very ancient origins. Our work is clear. It is to trace these ancient origins, and to connect them with the Middle Ages. Then we can get to more recent times (relatively speaking). Now, when we say, "very ancient origins" -- we don't mean that the Johannite Legend given below goes all the way back to ancient Sumer. For, without getting too personally attached to this, from Enki and Oannes, and so forth, to Sanchuniathon, and the rather long string of Dosithei (plural) that we find in Assyria and Samaria, we find in these names, characters who were associated with the delivery of Wisdom and Knowledge to humankind. That is to say, Ea has given the Gift of Wisdom, through a long line of Teachers. From the time that the narrative below picks up, this line of teaching can be found in the various Essenian schools, and Gnostic schools, and on, to the Crusades, where the survivals of these ancient schools met with the Europeans, and created a Western Dynasty, thus inaugurating the Rose-Croix, as we know it. From this comes the rest, the Rosicrucians, Alchemists, Freemasons, and so forth, to the French Order of the Temple, which was originally responsible for this "legend." From this French Order, came the Trinosophes, Fabre-Palaprat's and Ragon's Johannite Church, and later, the Neo-Templars, and Neo-Gnostics, of Reuss and Papus, and, of course, Aleister Crowley and his successors.
